I hope as many people as possible watch Escaping Idi Amin on iPlayer. It's essential viewing.
In 1972, Idi Amin gave Uganda's Asians 90 days to leave. Around 80,000 people. Four of them, Bharti, Harminder, Paresh and Maz, tell their stories here.
The testimony is heartbreaking. Brutal incidents that shock and disturb beyond comprehension. Paresh, recalling what he saw as a nine-year-old: "Every time I talk about it, it destroys me a little bit."
Then there's Britain. Leicester City Council placed ads in Ugandan papers telling people they weren't welcome before a single person had arrived. One man insists Asians have no ties to Britain, and the camera drops to the bag in his hand: "India Craft Ltd." Pointed, and painfully familiar. Minorities as political pawns. Different decade, same playbook.
Beautifully crafted, haunting, ultimately hopeful. Documentary filmmaking that puts humanity front and centre.
